Volunteer designer! Mayya Lobova

Dear,

We have the pleasure to introduce Mayya Lobova, the volunteer designer who kindly answered to our request and accepted to work with us! Thank you very much! Here is her email:

“My name is Mayya Lobova. I am writing you from the other part of the world, which is Guyana, South America.
I am originally from Russia, but already living and working here in South America for 3 to 4 years.
I am monitoring escapethecity.org website everyday, and while checking the connections today and deciding to post my own connection, I saw your message on Xmas cards and souvenirs.

Let me now speak briefly about myself.
I have graduated in African Studies with focus on languages, ethnography and anthropology, and then moved to South America to work in mining, living both in Africa and South America. While moving in this direction, I started to make paintings and handmade things, which were mostly presents to the friends, colleagues and family.
Later I have opened several art exhibitions (here in Guyana, also in Tanzania, I am now trying to prepare one in Russia) of paintings dedicated to the beautiful nature of South America, I also took part in UNDP Art and film making competition for posters here in Guyana, and won the competition. All this happened in 2011 and the same year I decided to unite all my things into Mayya Artworks presents and products, which are mainly presents and handmade design things.
Most of the items are produced with the use of box paper (which is in abundance here since the spares and cargo are brought in it), local printed textiles, brazilian and maasai beads, and acrylics paint. I have attached the photos of some of the items to the letter.  There were designed in Namibia (jewelry), Caribbeans (Painted shells) and Guyana (posters, stone and paintings). More photos are available in my albums on facebook.

When I saw your message, I thought that it would be great to share or to develop some design ideas for both souvenirs and cards for your project.

I am really interested in your offer. I might not have proper designer education, but what I know for sure is that I am ready to generate new ideas on design and decoration, and put these ideas into life for the other people to be happy with it, using all my cross-cultural experience together with the knowledge of cultures, materials and techniques.

Wish you all the best in the development of Ta Phin Sapa project”

Get Involved – Make a difference!

Dear,

Would you like to get involved with this project? We need your help, opinion, ideas, etc! We are thinking to make a kind of “souvenirs” that we will sell in this community house a part of the handicrafts made by the Red Dao women. Any idea? This extra income will help to pay the basic cost as water, electricity, etc and made this project sustainable and attractive. We also want to make a Xmas cards to raise the money needed to finish the house. Do you want to design these cards? Please let us know at vmglopes@gmail.com.

The Ta Phin Team are working now in the next visit to Vietnam, the next Charity Event in Hanoi and also preparing all the meetings with several organism in Vietnam.

Updating forecast, $18.000!

Dear,

We are analyzing the new forecast and we could achieve around 18.000$. This is mainly due to the land that we had to buy for 4.500$, an increase in transports around 12%, a new accommodation cost (meals for two key persons during the three construction’s months, 720$) and a new cost as a ceiling plate for the roof for 1.400$ (more ecological and sustainable but more expensive).

All these costs will be checked and proved with the respective invoices.

In summary, we need to raise approximately more 4.000$.

The wood…

Dear,

We communicate in a previous email that we bought a big old wood house, the total cost was 20 million Dongs (1000$). It’s enough wood for this house and it is in great condition. We took this decision instead to buy in Hanoi due to the higher price, should be 4-5000$. The picture:

First pictures of the construction!

Dear,
Now you can delight with the first pictures of the construction! We will post all the steps as soon as possible, it is usually a hard work to go to Ta Phin, come back to Hanoi and update all the information. But we really want to share with you all the steps! The pictures show the materials, the stakeout and the first steps. As you can see, these women from the Red Dao’ ethny have been working very hard, they are extraordinary people!

Your generous contribution help to make this project a reality.

Finding materials and local workers

(BK Kapella’s photo)

Dear,

We are going to share with you all the details of this wonderful project!

For starting we bought a big and old wood house for 1000$ instead to buy material in Hanoi much more expensive, the price could be 4-5000$. The location to buy stone, cement and sand has been found. The cost for the carpenter will be 1500$ and for the builder 1000$ as we estimated previously.

Due to the change of the location for the community house, we expect a faster construction. The land is flat and the access is easier. We estimate 3 months to finish the house, 15th December 2011 should be deadline! Let’s see!

15 September (12:00 GMT:+7): Starting!

Dear,
The construction already started!

An important change was done due to a serious problem. The slope of the terrain is 30°. It’s too high and too dangerous when it have flood. To prevent flood and landslide we have to leveling and then make a strong embankment. The total cost would be 7.500$. So we decided to move to another land, also in a good location for the local people.

Fundraising status!

Dear,

We raised over $500 by selling postcards and bookmarks!
Thank you for your support!
